The Ice and Snow of Summer

Three Sweet Spots for Cool Treats

Legend has it, Eskimos have 100 different words for ice and snow. But, it’s summertime, you’ve weathered another Maryland winter and the only kind of ice and snow that should concern you now can be summed up in one word: delicious. In and around Towson, there are countless places to satisfy your summer sweet tooth. The following three, though, are serving up the stuff of legend!

Uncle Wiggly’s Deli & Ice Cream

6911 York Road, Baltimore, MD 21212

If you scream for ice cream, head to Uncle Wiggly’s. They’ve been serving local Taharka Bros. ice cream since 1995. There’s indoor seating, plus a secluded patio out back with a burbling fountain and checkerboard-topped tables and seats. Patrons can enjoy deli sandwiches—try the turkey and apple panini—and ice cream in a variety of flavors. Unsure which flavor you want? No problem—ask to sample before committing. Try some of these best-sellers:

  • Honey graham—their most popular ice cream. Try it, and you’ll understand why.
  • Toasted coconut
  • Coffee Oreo

35-79 Parks Ave., Cockeysville, MD 21030

Owned and operated by the Hays family, Snoasis has been serving authentic Baltimore snowballs—shaved ice, flavored with syrup, served in a styrofoam cup and usually topped with liquid marshmallow—for 30 years. Sitting at brightly colored picnic tables under thatched umbrellas, surrounded by sugar-white sand with real palm trees and Jimmy Buffet crooning through the speakers, you’ll feel like you’re at the beach. Bring cash because they don’t take plastic, and ask for a punch card because you’ll definitely be back. There are dozens of flavors. Here are a few of the most popular:

  • Egg custard—a classic
  • Skylite—a Baltimore original
  • Minecraft Mania—Granny Smith mixed with sour grape

Tropicool Italian Ice

6083 Falls Road, Suite 1, Baltimore, MD 21209

If you’re hankering for an Italian ice, you need to visit Tropicool. Well-known for amazing, silky-smooth Italian ice, they also serve great soft serve ice cream, milkshakes, floats, smoothies and lemon sticks. They even have frozen dog treats for their furry, four-legged patrons. Everything’s made in-house and is sure to have you smiling through a brain freeze. A few of the most popular menu items include:

  • Mango ice—made with fresh mango, hand-chopped daily
  • Ginger ice—a favorite of area chefs
  • Birthday cake ice—modeled after Graul’s famous birthday cakes

Keep cool, Towson, and remember—winter’s right around the corner, so get out and enjoy every drop of sweetness this summer has to offer.
